Further Information

Background

The Philanthropy Foundation was established as a charity (no 1145808) in 2011, through a partnership between Adam Private Bank and Forsters LLP, as a means of encouraging, promoting and delivering philanthropic giving by individuals and businesses.

Whilst recognising that there was already a wealth of advice on philanthropic giving and established means of distribution that potential donors might access, there was a gap in provision for a quality service offering a “one-stop-shop” which would:

  • help a donor to develop philanthropic programmes based on their own wishes;
  • invest and manage the funds;
  • implement effective fundraising strategies to leverage an investment 1:3;
  • identify and distribute grants; and
  • evaluate the impact of awards made against the donor’s objectives.

Establishing an Individual Giving Fund

The use of an Individual Giving Fund provides a number of significant advantages to the donor compared to their setting up a separate charitable trust or organisation:

  • Legal and administrative functions are carried out by The Philanthropy Foundation trustees and staff, saving time and costs;
  • Gift Aid recovery processes are managed by the Foundation, enhancing the value of the donation (where applicable);
  • Access to specialist advice is available to help donors identify existing charities and projects within areas of interest, and/or to develop new charitable activities;
  • Opportunities to ‘partner’ with other like-minded donors and funding organisations can be arranged to make charitable support stretch further;
  • Monitoring will be organised by the Foundation on project activities and achievements;
  • Reports will be provided by the Foundation on Individual Giving Fund transactions and balances.

It is anticipated that most donors will choose to direct their giving personally, although the Foundation’s own Development Fund will welcome support from individual donors who prefer to contribute more generally to charitable causes selected by The Philanthropy Foundation Trustees.

All funds are set up directly with Adam Private Bank, the banking partner for The Philanthropy Foundation.

The nature of your giving and the programmes that you develop can stretch across one or more areas of charitable interest. These might include:

  • advancing the arts, culture, heritage or science;
  • advancing amateur sport;
  • the relief of those in need, by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage;
  • advancing education;
  • advancing citizenship or community development;
  • advancing of human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation or the promotion of religious or racial harmony or equality and diversity.

Investment of Funds

The Individual Giving Fund will normally be held in instant access and/or short-term (1 year or less) cash deposits. Where an Individual Giving Fund has an initial value of £300,000 or more, and the Fund’s intended use is compatible with longer-term holdings, the donor and The Philanthropy Foundation’s trustees may agree an appropriate investment strategy in other assets, normally one of a range of portfolios of UK listed equities and investment grade bonds. The Philanthropy Foundation engages professional investment advisors for this purpose in conjunction with Adam Private Bank.

A breakdown of fee charges is available on request but will not exceed 1% in annual administration costs.
